oh, my, the most amazing, sent sanctisational -- right now, at 5:00, one of the biggest areas in bay history turns 30 today. the trombone player on that game-winning touchdown. also, stay ag live. players and fans react to barry zito's season-saving performance. plus, rain is on the way, but will it be a factor in tomorrow fight's game? we'll let you know. >> good evening to you. i'm kris sanchez in for diane dwyer. we begin with a moment in sports history a that is impossible to forget. it is known as the play. the end of the big game between

cal and stanford in 1982 and on this 30 th anniversary of the play at the big game today we talked with those two men whose lives were forever changed in those few seconds, three decades ago. nbc's bay area is live on the uk berkeley campus. if you grew up in the bay area, you know that play, you know a call. >> that's right. it was probably the most dramatic end to a college football game ever. that is why it is known simply as the play. >> the band is out on the field. he's going so the end zone! >> it was 1982 and cal was trailing stanford 19-20 with four seconds to go in the glam, stanford kicked off the. the ball was lateraled from player to player and cal player reached the end zone as the stanford band was already there on the field to apparently celebrate their team's victory. but he scored and knocked over a

trombone player by the name of gary. cal won the game and is rest the sport's history. today they both attended to cal/stanford game and reminisced about that moment that changed both of their lives. >> two seconds of my life 30 years ago. sort of incredible thing is that, you know, probably every month of my life since then someone has asked me about that two seconds of my life. >> it was great. it's a great memory to have. down the road, you know, you get older. one of those moments where you were a young player at cal. great thing to remember. >> terrell is now a cfo for adventure capital firm and mow went works for caldwell banker in southern california. people still recognize them three decades later and, of course, everyone still remembers the play. by the way, stanford won today's game, 21-3. live in berkeley, nbc bay area news. >> you have tickets to another game there behind you.

thank you. from one big game to another, we are, of course, talking about the giants. the team is back home here in the bay area. gearing up for tomorrow night's must win game. it is game six in the national league championship series against the st. louis cardinals. we have team coverage tonight and we begin with comcast sportsnet in the newsroom there. hello, henry. >> hello, chris. we are waiting for that big game. i'm not talking about football. i'm talking about baseball. giants fans aren't complaining about barry zito's contract today after years of not living up to that nine-figure deal zito helped the giants avoid elimination and send the series back to san francisco for game six and hopefully game seven. you know, zito kept the cardinalses off balance all night long. 7 2/3 shutout innings for the first postseason win since 2006 when he was pitching on the other side of the bay. even more impressive, the giants have not lost with zito on the

mound since the beginning of august. >> i couldn't be happier for him. i mean, he's done a great job for us this year. and i don't know how many times we needed to win this year. he found a way to get it done. not quite, you know, the same game that he pitched tonight and what was at stake. >> he has been phenomenal for a long time. you know, i think even his last, like, i said before the game, 10, 12 starts, i feel like he's one every single time. you feed off of, you know, it's like he has like this really intense focus. >> given the stage and circumstances, was this the game of your life? >> yeah, it is. i mean, i pitched in one cf game and that was back in '06. it wasn't a good start for me. the most important thing for me is to do it in a giants uniform. one thing about how it's been in a as uniform but i'm more

stadium and that energy has certainly lasted to today as anticipation grows ahead of tomorrow's game. fans say they're thrilled the team is back in the bay where they can cheer them on and we of course heard a lot of love for pitcher barry zito. the starting pitcher who many credit with last night's win. >> oh, zito was amazing. just -- and listen to the workout that the guy does. i mean, he's a monster. and physical, you know, i should talk. he makes me look bad. >> intense, crazy, fun, exciting, torturous, of course, but san francisco, we're used to that. >> very exciting. it's very important. i am so excited that they won last night, to be able to play tomorrow. it's very exciting. >> they seem to do this stuff over and over again. >> i know. at the last minute every time. we just enjoy it. just enjoy it. exciting. >> the team will have to win tomorrow and also on monday in order to get into the world

series. tough odds but fans say they've done it before and they expect they will do it again. live in san francisco, kimberly terry, nbc bay area news. >> the giants had to deal with rain delays in st. louis. game six, of course, here tomorrow so are we going to see a repeat of that kind of weather? meteorologist joins us with when we can expect the rain drop, rob? >> it's a shame we can't be playing the game right now because it's absolutely gorgeous across the bay. mostly sunny guys. this time tomorrow we're going to start to see clouds spilling on in. one of the things i think we will see right around game time will winds picking up out of the south. steadily increasing clouds but should be a dry start to the game. towards the later innings. we will get mostly cloudy conditions. as the game goes into extra innings, that's when the chance of seeing late showers could appear. most of the rain will be holding off until a little bit later on sunday night. we do have an active jet stream powering in wind, rain, and the first significant fall,

snowfall. very energetic pattern setting up for us as we wrap up the reekd. we will be seeing changes right as that game starts to wind down. we will show you the impact on your seven-day forecast and the rest of your weekend forecast coming up in just a few minutes. >> amazing how you can pinpoint it. thank you very much. the san mateo bridge is shut down today, closed all of the way until monday. this is a live look at the bridge where caltrans cruise ew replacing the bridge. it should reopen by 5:00 monday morning and then close again next weekend. so, if you need to get somewhere without the san mateo bridge you can use the dumbarton bridge, highway 237 as your alternate route. if you dialled a south bay phone number today without the area code you got one of those annoying error messages. big change for the 408 today. you must now dial the entire phone number. that means 1-408 and the phone number even if you're calling for another 408 number and then next month a new 669 area code

will be introduced in the south bay because santa clara county is just plumb running out of 408 numbers. governor jerry brown was in the bay area today to push for voters to pass proposition 30 and reject proposition 32. dozens of california educators were on hand at the news conference to show their support. proposition 30 would prevent billions of dollars in cuts to schools and colleges. prop 32 prevents unions from using dues for political purposes. brown said he values the quality of the education he got in san francisco public schools and wants to make sure that quality continues. >> we need in schools, not just standardized tests that come out of some washington bureaucracy but we also need arts programs, science programs, field trips, librarians, counselors. >> the yes on proposition 32

campaign argues that the proposition removes special interest money from politics. those who are against prop 30 say it does not guarantee any new fund for schools. it kills jobs and could be harmful to small businesses. next at 5:00, she is in the prime of her life and her career. diagnose with alzheimer's in her early 50s. see how one woman is trying to slow down the disease as she prepares for her future. also, will weather spoil your chance to see one of this year's better meteor showers tonight? we will see whether the skies will be all clear. and we have all of the highlights from the 115 big games. all of that coming up in sports.

thousands of people took to downtown san jose streets for the walk and alzheimer's this morning. among them was a woman named susan harvel who got that heartbreaking diagnosis at the age of 53. we show you how she is prepare for a life she may soon not remember. >> she described herself as a type a go-getter, a silicon valley hr exec who is always active. but recently her husband dave

noticed some changes in her. >> she would ask similar questions repeatedly. >> so she came here to stanford hospital center for memory disorders where she had several brain scans. she also took several tests like this one to assess her memory and cognitive skills. >> laundromat, plumb, bank, tunnel. now, how many of those words can you remember? >> after all her testing, at only age 53, susan received a new title, alzheimer's patient. >> i cried on the way home. >> she could no longer work or drive. >> it was just hard. it was like turning my whole life upside-down. >> not just hers but her family's, too. >> it's a difficult diagnosis that -- that -- you know, it's not going to get better. >> susan's not alone.

the alzheimer's association says of the 5.4 million americans living with the disease, 4% were diagnosed before the age of 65 and that number is growing. >> that means patient's children are younger, too. susan's daughter claire is only 22 and she's concerned about what she might face in the future. >> you know, you're going to show up and be like, oh, my mom doesn't know who i am. that kind of stuff. so it's obviously a real concern. >> susan's doctor says however difficult, an early diagnosis can offer patients an advantage with medications. >> yes, taking those medications earlier means that you will get more use out of them. >> still, he says, current medications will not slow the progression of the disease but he says something simple might. >> the one thing that we've identified so far that does seem to slow down the disease process is aerobic exercise. as old fashion as that sounds,

that still more effective than any medications than embedded. >> and he says research shows exercise can also help delay the age you developal sooim fers you're at risk. as she shares memories with her daughter, susan says she considers her early diagnosis a gift. more time to make decisions about how she wants to do things. but she also recognizes she may have less time with her family than she had hoped. >> i want to spend the rest of my life with my family. but i just -- i kind of -- in my life i always tried to take the high road. >> which is now she is part of a clinical trial at stanford testing a new alzheimer's drug and she is volunteering with the alzheimer's association to help raise money for research. >> i have to kind of take things day by day. you know? i feel great now. i feel like i can do just about anything. >> in san jose, nbc bay area

tonight will be the best viewing of the orion meteor shower if the skies are clear. sky wapers are still basking in the glow of the meteor to streekd across the skies on wednesday. scientists at the institute in mountain view say it was not related to the orion meteor shower pass tlug earth's orbit. it was caught on surveillance scam as as well. the study institute is helping people get a shot of it with their cellphones and home video cameras and are willing to share. >> there are two things important here. one would be to get the more visual material. somebody who has photos, videos, that sort of thing. if we can look at those things, then our meteor guys can, you know, compute the trajectory more accurately. in other words, what path did it follow coming in and that would allow us .2 to maybe find fragments of this thing. >> i'm from l.a. >> as the orion meteor shower will be seen best around midnight, you should head to an area away from city lights and

at its peak you may see up to 15 meteors per hour or one every four minutes. maybe worth staying up past your bedtime unless there is going to be fog. meteorologist is here that knows the answer to that. >> we're going to be in pretty good shape. the hilltop areas should be good before the low clouds start to reform again on the coast. and what we're looking at tonight are really sand grain size particles to pebble size object that quickly burn up as they fall and reach the stratosphere. it gives you the flashing light inside. like the washing machine size or small car size object that came through the sky on wednesday. this is much smaller objects. the best left behind comet. the small particles, create the flashes of light. i think the best viewing look off to the southern skies tonight near the constellation orion and, yes, the hilltop locations in our inland valley. places away from the coastal fog

should have decent viewing tonight but i don't think it's going to top what we saw on wednesday. temperatures right now cooling off as the sea breeze is picking up. you've got winds close to 25 miles per hour. 6 in oakland. 64 in san jose. still some low 70s inland. 76 in san rosa. from here, though, those temperatures are going to drop down quite a bit as we get to the gik of next week. nova novato, winds west. west at 20 in oakland. san jose. so, here is a sneak preview. what we're going to be seeing changeswise, getting into tomorrow. increasing clouds. winds picking up out of the south. out ahead of the cold front, brings in the rain sunday night into monday morning. we could see a break for monday afternoon. but then as that cold air arrives, quite a bit of snow for elevation. 6,000 feet in the sierra. the first significant snowfall of fall. right now the satellite and radar view shows you energetic pattern that the jet stream right now to the north is going to drop to the south. this is a big pattern change from the 80s and 90s just a

couple days ago to the completely opposite pattern as jet stream drops into central california. the storm door opens up. system after system is going to be sweeping on in. the main event tomorrow night into monday morning would make as mess of the morning commute. wind and rain coming in. half inch of rain in the north bay and quarter inch in san francisco. during the day tomorrow, increasing clouds. increasing chance of starting to see the rain sweep on in. especially as we get into monday morning. here's the cold front sweeping through. and then some scattered showers as we get into monday evening. tonight, 40s and fichts outside. patches of low clouds. tomorrow's highs will be in the 60s to near 70. increasing clouds and those winds are really going to pick up towards the evening. i think you will notice that up, up to 25 miles per hour. not only in san francisco but the coastal hilltops, too. the winds will pick up. highs to wrap up the weekend in the north bay in the i per 60s. rain increasing. thunderstorms in tuesday. wednesday into thursday, looks

like we will see one more system come on in. as we head towards friday and saturday, clearing skies. after the rain, we will probably have some morning fog. so tomorrow's game i think is going to be fine for the -- in terms of weather. breezes and winds picking up. and then monday, too, hope we get that clearing line for monday evening. that would be game seven. being optimistic. >> well, we are hope for game seven. now we have to win it. but you said rain only a factor if it goes into extra innings. >> anything after 8:00 or 9:00 basically, isolated shower. >> more than one reason to not go into extra innings. comcast sports joins us now. the torture, henry. >> absolutely. we've got a huge game coming up. that one is tomorrow, game six, of the nlcs. then we've got a big game which took place today. we're going to take you out to the hill, the berkeley, california, and show you who got the best of who. would it be cal or stanford? answer might surprise you.

walnut creek back to nbc bay area. when is a regular season game not just a game? when it's the big game. cal and stanford love play norg bragging rights from the heavy hitters collided in berkeley this afternoon for the 115th big game. here's your highlights. stanford on the line in the first quarter. it was first and goal, taylor finds the end zone. taylor would run for a career high 189 yards. 7-0, stanford. second quarter, second and goal at cal. ke kevin hogan finds levine and then later in the second

quarter, stanford's first play of possession, nunez passes to wide open zach. 21-3, stanford. cal would try to fight back but it was the third day. zach maynard pass intercepted. stanford wins and they got their hands back, 21-3 is your final. they win the big game for the third straight year. warriors will shut curie down for the rest of the preseason after he tweaked his ankle that was giving him so many problems the last two seasons. coach jackson says the move is precautionary and he should be available for the regular season opener. over to the as, who jumped right into their off season. oakland acquired outfielder chris young from the diamondbacks in exchange for cliff pennington, the shortstop, and minor league prospect, young, who was only 29 years old, battled injuries last

season but with an all-star in 2010. meanwhile, the giants are preparing to stay alive. they're facing another limit nation game, but this time they're at home. the giants will host the st. louis cardinals in game six and possibly seven on monday. now, tomorrow the game is at 4:30. kim previewed the showdown. >> ryan vogelsong made his postseason debut 11 days ago but already earned the reputation as a big game pitcher. vogelsong believes the ups and downs throughout his career have helped to prepare him for baseball's biggest stage. >> god's been preparing me for this moment for a long time. you know overseas, winter ball, 33, all the struggles. i feel like god's been using all those situations preparing me for this postseason. and that's where my confidence comes from. >> it's incredible, what he's done. you know, we definitely would
